The UWC-IBO Initiative in BiH supports the professional development of high school teachers from BiH schools. Through a series of workshops in Mostar and study visits to Slovenian secondary schools, the Initiative provides training in international educational standards and fosters local teachers’ links with teachers from other parts of the region and the world to discuss educational methods. The Initiative’s Centre for Professional Development of Teachers in BiH has so far organized workshops, conferences, seminars and study visits to Slovenia for more than 500 teachers and education experts.
Through its activities, the project creates a rare opportunity and forum for BiH teachers to come together to share and reflect upon their professional needs and to discuss ideas for the reform. The creation of such networks will be a basis for advocacy in working towards a sustainable reform in education. The Initiative encourages close cooperation with the Second Gymnasium in Sarajevo on increasing the influence of its existing IB programme, and with the Gymnasium in Banja Luka on strengthening its recently setup IB programme. In addition, the Initiative assists other interested schools to introduce the IB programme. The Initiative is taking part in the interregional project PACE (Project, Agency, Cooperation, Education), directed at re-establishing educational connections between the Balkan countries and the Adriatic region (BiH, Croatia, Italy, Montenegro, Serbia).
